Dental Crowns

At Semaphore Dental, we believe everyone should have the confidence to smile. If you’re lacking confidence due to worn, uneven teeth, dental crowns may be perfect for you.

Dental crowns are an excellent restorative dentistry solution for anyone with an ageing, tired-looking smile. It involves completely covering a worn tooth to create an entirely new outer layer, giving the patient a more attractive, natural appearance.

What are dental crowns?

Dental crowns are a cap for any teeth that are worn down towards the gum. This cap covers the outer layer of the tooth to create a healthier, more natural look. Crowns differ from fillings in that they become a new outer layer for the tooth, whereas fillings only cover a portion.

Crowns can be made out of a range of materials, depending on your budget and other specifications. The most common materials used are porcelain (a form of dental ceramic), metal (a gold or other metal alloy), or a combination of both.

Please note that dental crowns are sometimes referred to as ‘dental caps’ and ‘tooth caps’.

The three key purposes of dental crowns are to:

  • Restore a tooth to its original shape
  • Strengthen a tooth
  • Improve the cosmetic appearance of a tooth
